Broadcast legend Michael Parkinson talks favourite venues and Yorkshire stalwarts

What's your favourite place to watch cricket?
I have two favourite grounds - Lord's and the Sydney Cricket Ground. I love them both. Both have tradition and atmosphere.

What was the worst thing about opening with Dickie Bird in club cricket?
Dickie was so nervous. The thing that sticks in the mind is his batting gloves. He used to chew madly on them and the horsehair stuffing would protrude from the gloves and find themselves stuck to his face. He looked like a thinner version of WG Grace.

What's bigger, the Ashes or the World Cup?
The Ashes, without doubt. It is the ultimate test between traditional rivals England and Australia. The Ashes will always remain in my mind as the greatest of cricket contests.

Who's the greatest cricketer of all time?
It has to be Garfield Sobers. He had it all - a brilliant batsman, a fast and slow bowler, and brilliant fieldsman. The best of all time as an all-round cricketer, no doubt.

Who would you pick to bat for your life?
Geoffrey Boycott. He epitomised all that is great with Yorkshire and Yorkshire cricketers. He was resilient, tough and technically brilliant.
